WHEN you’re a singer or music writer NEVER be put off by those who say you can’t sing or can’t write because EVERY singer and writer sometimes gets it in the neck usually from cloth eared ne’er do wells.
But I knew I was INVITING rejection and barbs when I wrote my latest Johnny Dysfunctional single release World War 3 & Apathy.
I was confident it would be rejected as unsuitable for playlists and streaming by the movers and shakers out there. The content was risqué and it was rather long, ending with a nuclear blast. It wasn’t sung but had a voiced narrative from a character voiced by me who was content to watch TV as the world vanished in a mushroom cloud.
My character was more concerned that TV programming had been cancelled than the prospect of nuclear annihilation.
Let me take you through a few of the responses. Tongue Tied magazine came back at me all guns blazing
“While I appreciate your passion for the topic, I found the spoken word introduction off-putting and unnecessary for the track. It was also longer than I think would be apropos. The vocals were also off-key.”
What!
Now where did I keep those razor blades.
Then French company LBC Musique came to the rescue Merci d’avoir pris contact avec nous !
For non-Francophiles that translates “Thank you for getting in touch with us! We’re excited to announce that you’ve added your track to our Spotify playlist. 🎶 https://open.spotify.com/playlist/02M5AqXsYamLyXO4J8TAq0 Looking forward to seeing your evolution! Sincerely, The LBCMusique Team
No singing complaints from the French nation. Then A London promo company replied: “it’s nice to hear something that’s fresh and keeping with the times. Like the passion and the vocal delivery as well.”
Hey yeah. I love you too.
Indiemusicflix said: “I found the track to be poetic and emotional, very good unique topic handled well
Soundville came back: Hi, I appreciate your message, the interesting structure, and the genuinely strong concept behind it. The excellent choruses and melody development are intriguing, it’s really well done! I’m confident you’ll find your audience, and the song will do well in rotation. However, as I listened, I felt it’s quite experimental for us right now in terms of structure and melody. Because of this, I have to pass, but I hope to hear more from you in the future. Thanks again and best of luck!
Music by Humans listened and responded: “To be honest, the track is wonderful and we really want to share it on “Artists To Watch” and spread it to the word. Keep it up.
There were more responses that were encouraging than critical.
I like to take risks and be innovative on a theme and this showed me that people do still listen – even if the track is approaching five minutes long.
Check it out and let me know what you think, if you haven’t already.
